I rise with the sun, the pale-yellow beams of light streaming in through the sheer curtains of my childhood bedroom. It’s nice, waking up to the sound of barnyard animals and the whinny of horses out in the pasture. I guess being back has reawakened the farmer in me, because I immediately rise when I hear the call of the rooster outside.

With a wide yawn, I slip out from under the covers and throw my legs over the edge of the bed. It’s smaller than I remember. Or maybe the problem is I’ve grown too large for it.

Slowly, I make my way to the window to take in the farm, the floorboards creaking under my weight. I’m surprised when I see Winona standing by the chicken coop, watching as the hens and their chicks wander around, pecking at the grass beneath their feet. Curiosity burns in the pit of my stomach. It can’t be earlier than six. What’s Winona doing up and out all by her lonesome?

I’m going to have to fix that.

Mid-June in Alabama means humidity and heat, but because it’s early, there’s a nice little breeze. Winona's shivering when I reach her, so I instinctually shrug off my jacket and slip it over her shoulders, wondering if the shiver is because of all that’s happened.

She gasps softly, surprised by my appearance. “O-oh, thank you, Tank.”

“My pleasure, sugar.”

The dark circles beneath her eyes are cause for concern, are the edges of her eyes, which are red-rimmed and puffy. The thought of Winona crying the entire night doesn’t sit well with me. In fact, it hurts. Like her pain is my pain—and I want nothing more than to make it all go away.

I wrap an arm around her lower back and lean against the fencing with her to observe the chickens. “Did you not sleep?” I whisper.

“How could I?” she asks around a bitter laugh. “Some madman has my brother hostage and there isn’t a damn thing I can do about it. Have you and the guys—”

I shake my head, sensing her question before she finishes. “We haven’t made a decision yet.”

Winona deflates, shrinking in on herself. “I see.”

I can’t bear to see her like this, so I do the only thing that comes to mind. I lean in and press a tender kiss to her cheek, her temple, to her hair. I hold her as tight as I’m able, every kiss an attempt at bringing her some small semblance of comfort. We’re in the same boat, she and I. I want William to come back alive, too.

“Tank,” she murmurs, turning to face me. She presses her hands against my chest as I continue to pepper her face with sweet kisses. Eventually, her fingers climb up to curl in my hair. “Tank, kiss me.”

I do so, unable to deny her a thing.

Our lips slot together easily, a perfect fit. She tastes sweeter than honey, feels softer than a cloud. I curse my rotten luck that we couldn’t have met under better circumstances.
